Participation in the arts produces numerous benefits that have been well documented for many years. Children who participate in the arts reap benefits that range from academic improvements to greater self-esteem. Students learn the importance of diligence in practice, how to think creatively and express themselves in a variety of manners. In spite of the many benefits derived from arts participation, funding for arts-related and creative education has decreased dramatically over the past decade, and the decline has been most rapid in poorer, urban schools.
With the mission to love, equip and empower inner-city youth, Urban Youth Impact strives to provide an assortment of ways in which students who participate in our afterschool program, The Leadership Academy, can learn and grow creatively. Urban Youth Impact’s Studio of the Arts includes options for students to participate in choir, photography, violin, drum, arts and crafts, and piano instruction on a weekly basis. Youth sign up to participate in their areas of interest and commit to remain in the class for one semester. During spring break, students from our program have the opportunity to participate in the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts Residency Program. This is a two week program in which students collaborate with local and out of state artists in order to put on one production on the Kravis Center stage. The final performance consists of dance, singing, visual arts, poetry, step, videography, and rap all performed by 50 students from across Palm Beach County afterschool programs. This past year, 8 students from our Leadership Academy were selected to participate in this special program. For more information about the Studio of the Arts, contact Lorraine Mutzer.
