Thanks to your support, we did it again -- we had our best fundraiser ever in Urban Youth Impact's history! Our 10th Annual Charity Auction Dinner & Golf Classic was filled with joyful generosity as people heard testimonies from children and young adults whose lives have been changed because of our work. One story was shared by Freddie:
"My name is Freddie Canady and this is my testimony. I’m humbled to finally realize that God has been calling me for my whole life, waiting for me to respond, waiting for me to listen. Fatherless, I have found a father. Directionless, I have found a direction. Purposeless, I have found a purpose. Bill Hobbs and the Urban Youth Impact Family were the change that changed me.
I grew up in a broken family with a father who was never around. My Mother was addicted to Cocaine and my step-father was physically abusive. When I was six years old I ran away from home to live with my grandmother.
When I was 15 years old my friend Eric invited me to a Thursday afternoon event held by Urban Youth Impact that was all about football and Christ. I went with Eric every Thursday throughout high school and grew in my understanding of the gospel, believing that God had a plan for my life.
I spent many nights with friends at Mr. Bill’s home, and I attended camp with Urban Youth Impact every year. I played football all four years of high school. Although my Dad never came to my games, Bill was always there. He became like a father to me.
The year I graduated high school, my friend Eric died – my best friend was gone. We were always together. He had led me to Urban Youth Impact. His death changed everything and I quickly started hanging out with a bad group of friends and lost contact with Mr. Bill.
Lost, changing from hopeful to hopeless, I was driving in the car with my friends one day when our car was shot and the bullet hit my leg. After that day I never went back to work, and instead I turned to the streets.
One day, I thought maybe I was ready to get off the streets, so I went to visit Mr. Bill.
Bill said, “I don’t think you’re ready.” I said, “Yes I am.” He said, “If you’re really ready to leave the streets, will you cut off your dreads?” I said no, and walked out the door. He was right. I wasn’t really ready to change just yet.
Shortly after meeting with Mr. Bill, I was locked up in the county jail. After 7 months I was released. I managed to stay out for a few months before they sent me right back for 4 more months. During my time in the county jail the second time, God finally got hold of me – he knocked again – this time I was ready.
As soon as I was released, I immediately cut off my dreads. After that I went directly to Bill and told him I was serious about changing my life. I wanted to surround myself with friends who would encourage me. Bill gave me a job at Urban Youth Impact and I have been working doing facilities maintenance ever since. I have surrounded myself with good friends and feel the Lord working in my life.
I see kids without fathers – I see kids that are like me – my passion is now to help them. It’s my time to make sure a life is saved and changed. My grandma once told me “You are blessed and you are always going to be blessed.” Thanks to Urban Youth Impact I now believe that."
Now that's a powerful story of a life changed through our work! Praise God!
