Jeffrey Realizes His Dream
Jeffrey Byrd came by my office this month to share exciting news – he was accepted at Full Sail University to pursue a degree in Music Science and Music Engineering. Getting accepted to this school is difficult for any young adult, but having known Jeffrey since he was eight years old, I know the hardship and heartbreak this young man has endured, so this news was especially sweet.
When Jeffrey first came to UYI, he had incredible enthusiasm and extraordinary musical talents. He attended many of our programs and grew quickly in his relationship with the Lord by attending weekly Bible studies and Kids Across America camp with our group one summer. He participated in basketball outreaches where he learned discipline, team work and sacrifice. In school, he performed well academically and led as drum major. “I am so glad that UYI was there help steer me the right way,” said Jeffery.
In 2005, he experienced an unfortunate series of deaths in his family that brought him to a difficult time. Jeffrey was ultimately kicked out of high school, left to hang out on the streets. His home life was challenging and, like many inner-city youth, he lacked support and structure. “I felt betrayed and deserted by God and I made some bad choices,” said Jeffery. “But through it all, I still had Matthew 6:33 in my mind, ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’”
Jeffrey persevered through adversity and now has the opportunity to fully develop his talent of producing and writing music. Without the support, guidance and love Jeffrey received at UYI, this story may have ended differently.
There are many more children living in the inner city who have as much talent and potential as Jeffrey. We need your support to continue to provide the loving guidance, structured programs and exciting enhancements that will ensure more children from our community have the opportunity to see their hopes and dreams fulfilled. Thank you for providing critical as we love, equip and empower inner-city youth and their parents.
