Urban Youth Impact Leadership Academy Helps Students Succeed in Every Way
by providing academic, social/emotional, physical and spiritual enrichment through the students’ formative years.
Urban Youth Impact's arts program gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their talents.
Students involved in the arts program have performed at The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, community events, local churches, and The Leadership Academy's end of the year program.
Founded in 1997, Urban Youth Impact serves the Tamarind Avenue corridor and surrounding area in West Palm Beach. The area has notoriously high crime rates – almost three times the national average for all crime types. 32% of youth living in the community are not expected to graduate from high school, two-thirds live below the poverty level, and it is more likely that youth from our community will go to jail than graduate high school.Through its programs, UYI seeks to reverse troubling trends and fulfill its mission by offering programs designed to develop critical life-skills that result in less juvenile crime, fewer teen pregnancies, less substance abuse, less child abuse/domestic violence, and fewer school drop-outs.
My family and I would like to thank you for the most remarkable experience at the UYI Christmas Store. This was my first year with TLA and the Urban Youth Impact family. I have heard great things about the organization at church. For years Pastor Tom talked about how my church home Christ Fellowship supports Urban Youth Impact. I never knew what Urban Youth had to offer my family. It could not have come at a better time. You see the last two years have been trying for my family financially and spiritually. The moment I stepped on the TLA campus I knew God was there; from the warm smiles of the young lady that took care of my Zoe to the women that prayed for a job for my husband (by the way that prayer was answered).
The TLA Christmas Store just put the icing on the cake. Being that my husband just began work, buying gifts for my children is a little difficult this year, but I felt as though I was empowered as I walked through the aisles of the UYI Christmas store.
I was actually able to pick out gifts for my 3 girls as though I were shopping at one of the department stores. After shopping I was then offered prayer and was able to share testimonies from the last prayer with the team. Everyone was so courteous and helpful. I would like to thank Ms. Michele, Ms. Cece, Mr. and Mrs. Powell, Mr. Proverb, and Mr. Kebo for being so cheerful at 6:00am. And Mr. Larry for serving us water when we really needed it. Also Donna my fabulous gift wrapper, Anthony the UM student who took my blood pressure, and the two guys that helped me load my daughters’ bike and toys. My daughters would like to thank the volunteers from Kings Academy for a fabulous time.
As I walked out of the area from the event, I told my daughters that we will be volunteers next year giving back, making memories and being the hands and feet of Jesus the way you guys were for us.
