Urban Youth Impact Mission

Urban Youth Impact exists to love, equip and empower inner-city youth and their parents to fulfill their God-given purpose.

Founded in 1997, Urban Youth Impact serves the Tamarind Avenue corridor and surrounding area in West Palm Beach.  The area has notoriously high crime rates – almost three times the national average for all crime types.  32% of youth living in the community are not expected to graduate from high school, two-thirds live below the poverty level, and it is more likely that youth from our community will go to jail than graduate high school.

Through its programs, UYI seeks to reverse troubling trends and fulfill its mission by offering programs designed to develop critical life-skills that result in less juvenile crime, fewer teen pregnancies, less substance abuse, less child abuse/domestic violence, and fewer school drop-outs.

Goodbye UYI, Hello Motherhood

By Amarja, Urban Youth Impact Team Leader

I am a strong believer that there are seasons in life for everything. My season at Urban Youth Impact has been short lived but thanks be to God I have been amazed by the beautiful relationships that have blossomed with both the staff and kids since I started working here as a team leader earlier this year. I have been welcomed with open arms and have fallen in love with the kids, each of whom are extremely special and precious.

I came on staff after returning from two years serving in Cambodia with a group called Daughters of Cambodia (http://daughtersofcambodia.org/) that reaches out to victims of sex-trafficking and sex-exploitation. My experience in Cambodia had a powerful impact on my life but I came back to America feeling very much drained and exhausted from all that I had witnessed. Upon my return I had a short season of rest and then was given the opportunity to come on staff as a Team Leader at UYI.

Only God knows what an essential role being at UYI has played in aiding my healing process. The kids have brought me so much life and joy that I truly feel my soul has been restored. I am now entering into the season of first time motherhood. No longer will I be caring for other people’s children, but my own. This is exciting and a little scary at the same time. I pray that God will give me the grace to love, equip and empower her just as the UYI mission states and that motherhood, too, would bring me tremendous joy.
