Urban Youth Impact Leadership Academy Helps Students Succeed in Every Way
by providing academic, social/emotional, physical and spiritual enrichment through the students’ formative years.
Urban Youth Impact's arts program gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their talents.
Students involved in the arts program have performed at The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, community events, local churches, and The Leadership Academy's end of the year program.
Founded in 1997, Urban Youth Impact serves the Tamarind Avenue corridor and surrounding area in West Palm Beach. The area has notoriously high crime rates – almost three times the national average for all crime types. 32% of youth living in the community are not expected to graduate from high school, two-thirds live below the poverty level, and it is more likely that youth from our community will go to jail than graduate high school.Through its programs, UYI seeks to reverse troubling trends and fulfill its mission by offering programs designed to develop critical life-skills that result in less juvenile crime, fewer teen pregnancies, less substance abuse, less child abuse/domestic violence, and fewer school drop-outs.
When God called me out of golf nearly 25 years ago, I started ministering to young men in the detention center. When I realized that most of the young men in jail came from the area around Tamarind Avenue, I felt led to go there. From weekly football, food and fellowship, we’ve grown into an organization providing a wide-range of services to meet the needs the children and families have in this area.
As our commitment remains to West Palm Beach, God is leading us out once again to do more for this community. In an amazing set of divine “coincidences”, a door has opened for us to go into a housing project, Stonybrook Apartments, in Riviera Beach. The new owners of Stonybrook are Christian business men who have a desire to see a transformation in the community they own. They know that a change as radical as they hope to see won’t come from landscaping or renovations, but can only come with God changing hearts of the people.
So they called us to partner with them, asking us to bring the programs we have developed over the years that have brought about so many life changes here in West Palm Beach. The owners have offered Urban Youth Impact use of facilities free of charge so we can provide safe recreation afterschool, academic help to young students, sports outreach on weekends, and the love of God to all their residents.
We need your prayers. Stonybrook is plagued with problems. It is a hotbed for drug trafficking and violence. Shootings happen frequently. Pray for the safety of our staff who will be going in there. We know we are entering Enemy territory. Pray for power to stand and overcome the opposition we know we will face.
We need your financial support. Please let your giving grow with us. As we’re going out to Riviera Beach, we’re simultaneously “Growing Up”, which will ultimately add 40 students in The Leadership Academy and 30 teens and young adults in ReFrame, our new year-round work program. There are more than 400 children under the age of 18 in Stonybrook apartments. These are lives to change, but we can’t do it without your giving.
Please send your gift today, or consider setting up a reoccurring gift on-line.
Thank you for your support,
We rely on your giving to continue our important work.
